Book 10,000 Steps a Day in L.A.: 57 Walking Adventures Review :

L.A. is too sprawling to do a five-mile hike every day so my friend and I go every Sunday. We laugh with the author as he orchestrates self-guided tours from his book, sometimes we laugh at him, he sees more splendor than we do. He has has never lead us astray, but once and a while we curse the book when we are hot, tired, and a "slight incline" is really a prominent inferno across baking roads...at the last twenty minutes of the hike. Heat is our biggest problem, not the book.Urban hiking is a novel way to explore Los Angeles, and something to do during novel coronavirus pandemic. This is a perspective that knits together history, freeways, surface streets, parks, mountains, buildings and ocean. L.A is reveals herself in her patchy entirety as if she were a quilt in a closet for years, unfolding secrets I never understood from thirty years driving LA freeways. The hikes are not beautiful but a remembrance of beauty. The walks confirm that Los Angeles is broken, sliced-up by population expansion and city planning decades behind the times. Thank goodness for architects and a few visionary souls and nature, fighting humans. Every walk reveals how amazing it could have been. L.A. is such a strong setting, a character in her own right, an encumbered old lady through no fault of her own. I say, forgive L.A., shut up and listen to her story as you walk.Research the walks ahead to check if you are near something else worth seeing, stores, food, nature centers. if you buy the book, at the very least, you will exercise and consider L.A through different eyes.
I moved to LA 3 years ago, and I've been very active since then, traveling a lot, visiting all the "must" places...but this book has unveiled an entirely new world for me. I've been doing one of the walks every week, and I love it. The author, Paul Haddad, takes care of everything. You just need to follow his indications and enjoy the walk. But he does not only give indications; he also tells the history of the place, the secrets, and gives you picnic options. Seriously, you need this book!!I'm going to be gifting this book to every single Angeleno that I know.THANKS Paul Haddad!
